Analysis of the Distributed Bragg-Reflector Laser of Asymmetrical Geometry

Distributed Bragg-reflector lasers of asymmetrical geometry are analyzed in the scheme of coupled-mode theory. Threshold solution for the laser gain and the longitudinal mode pattern is calculated for various values of the coupling coefficient of distributed Bragg-reflectors. It is shown that the asymmetrical geometry considered here has a minimum value of threshold gain, if the pumped length is chosen appropriately. The directional output and the corresponding mode pattern are designed by selecting the coupling coefficients k_2 and k_3 under the consideration for the desired ratio of field intensity and the minimization of gain. The advantage in having periodic structure outside the active medium is also discussed.
