A New Type of the Spatial Filter for Detecting the Sharpness of Images

A new type of spatial filter is devised for use as a detector of the sharpness of the imvage projected on it. The advantage of the new filter lies in the fact that its output signal is not influenced by the relative displacement between the image and the filter, whereas if a spatial filter which is comtmonly used for the velocity uneasurement is adopted for the detection of the sharpness, some kind of mechanical movement must be introduced to either the image or the filter to remove thesinusoidal variation of the output signal due to the relative displacement. The characteristics of the new filter is made clear by introducing a series expansion formula based on the sampling theorem and the performance of a focus detection system which makes use of the filter is estimated quantitatively. It is also used to explain the results of fundamental experiments on the focus detection system.
