A Prism Correlator and Its Application to Stereo Photogrammetry

A new type of optical correlator, which makes use of a prism as an element of the imaging system, is presented. The features of this correlator lie in the simplicity of the optical system and the color display of the correlation output. The latter feature will play an important role when it is applied to stereo photogrammetry, that is, the extraction of height information from a pair of stereo photographs. In the conventional optical correlators which have been proposed so far, the correlation output is interrupted by background scenes and speckle noises, whereas in this correlator the correlation output is presented by color information so that it is not interrupted by the above obstacles. In this paper the principles of the prism correlator are given first and then two possible ways of observing the correlation output are described. Analsys of the distortion cauesd by the prism and results of some experiments are also presented.
