In a field emission gun system the effect of aberrations on the brightness of the beam has to be taken into consideration in order to utilize its inherent high brightness. In this paper the aberrations are discussed for various shapes of accelerating electrodes. Numerical calculations are made on the aberrations of simply shaped electrodes. The aberrations are found to depend on the geometry of the electrodes. Then the shape of an electrode with a minimum spherical aberration is calculated. The optimum electrode has a nearly "funnel" shape.
