The theoretical form of the diffracted light amplitude for the case of a light beam incident on phase gratings having refractive-index variation and surface corrugations simultaneously is derived on the basis of momentum conservation law. The theory remains valid for various gratings such as thin and thick gratings, unslanted and slanted fringe gratings and transmission and reflection gratings as long as the incident light is not strongly attenuated.
