Tactile Imaging Sensor Using Optical Tunneling Effect

A tactile sensor which uses optical tunneling effect to convert a tactile image (pressure distribution) into optical one (light intensity distribution) is presented. Optical components used for the sensor are a triangle prism and a sheet of transparent silicon rubber used for a light guide. The upper surface of the sheet is corrugated and the lower is flat. The prism is placed on the upper surface of the sheet. The features of the sensor are as follows : (1) high sensitivity (2) both tactile and optical imaging are available, simultaneously.
