The seven elastic constants, C_<ij>, and the elastic compliances, S_<ij>, of the tetragonal pentaerythritol single crystal are determined from the sound velocity measurements by the ultrasonic pulse method at room temperature. The elastic constants obtained are; C_<11>=40.5, C_<12>=26.6, C_<13>=10.5, C_<16>=3.13, C_<33>=13.9, C_<44>=2.74 and CC_<66>=2.52 (in unit of 10^<10> dyn/cm^2). The linear compressibilities of the pentaerythritol crystal are calculated from these elastic constants. The compressibility along (001), β_<(001)>, is 6.48×10^<-12> cm^2/dyn,and also β_<(010)>=β_<(100)> are 0.48×10^<-12> cm^2/dyn.
