Amplitude and phase determining equations for a gaseous multimode ring laser are derived to the third-order approximation in the Doppler limit on the basis of Lamb's theory. Two kinds of self-phase locking phenomena are analyzed from those equations. In the unidirectional three-mode ring laser, "0-type" or "π-type" locking occurs, unlike in the normal laser, according as the mode spacing is larger or smaller than a certain value which depends upon the decay constants of the active medium and the oscillation intensity. In the bidirectional ring laser, there exists another kind of self-phase locking. It locks the phases of the oppositely traveling waves. According as the mode spacing is larger or smaller than the recovery rate of the population inversion, the oppositely traveling wave packets encounter at, or pass alternately through, the center of the active medium.
