As a special case of the foregoing treatment of excitation, the case of free oscillation is investigated. The free oscillation of a Fabry-Perot resonator is defined by a complex frequency which satisfies a determinantal equation, and the diffraction loss and the resonant frequency are obtained. The mode patterns are given for (0, 0), (1, 0), (0, 1) and (2, 0) modes with Fresnel number N = 5, 10 and 20, some of which reproduce the fine details of the patterns found by Fox and Li. Furthermore, the free oscillation of a deformed Fabry-Perot resonator is investigated by an application of the theory of excitation. The diffraction loss in the presence of the tilt deformation is obtained from the root of determinantal equation modified slightly, by virture of the deformation, and is given by a simple algebraic expression in the same form as the previous result of the cavity theory.
