The Impurity substructure in zinc single crystals grown from the melt is studied experimentally. Geometrical shapes of the substructure are classified into three types according to the crystallographic growth direction. Sizes of these impurity substructures vary with growth speed and impurity content. It is concluded that diffusion of impurity atoms in the liquid plays the essential role on the formation of the substructure; the variation of impurity substructure are qualitatively explained by the impurity diffusion near the solid-liquid interface. It is also observed that large angle grain boundaries near the liquid-solid interface have the same character as the impurity substructure boundaries.
