Improved Confinement in a Field-Reversed Configuration Plasma Due to Neutral Beam Injection

The first Neutral Beam Injection(NBI)experiments on a Field-Reversed Configuration plasma(FRC)have been performed, and the configuration lifetime of the plasma was increased by more than 100%[T.Asai et al., Phys.Plasmas 7, 2294(2000)]. The low density(n 〜 10^<19> m^<-3>)and large bore(r_s 〜 0.2 m)FRC produced by translation enables the application of a conventional NB injector with 15 keV of energy. Our NB injector has concave electrodes that make a geometrically focused beam, which can pass through a narrow port. The power supplies and operating scheme for the NB injector have been improved in order to control extracted NB current. The beam current may be varied from 10 to 23 A at a fixed energy of 14 keV. The dependence of the lifetime on the injected NB current has been examined to understand the mechanism of improved confinement. The observed improvement is roughly proportional to the injected beam current. Electron heating due to the beam injection is discussed as a possible mechanism for the current dependency.
