The B-chromosome system of the Korean field mouse Apodemus peninsulae in the Russian Far East

The B-chromosome system of the Korean field mouse Apodemus peninsulae was investigated in a study of 363 specimens from the Russian Far East. B chromosomes (B's) were found in 287 of 312 specimens (A.p. peninsulae) from Magadan, the Amur-Khabarovsk (A-K) Region and the Primorye Territory but not in any of 51 specimens (A.p. giliacus) from Sakhalin. The frequency of B-carrying animals per population ranged from 0.5 to 1.0 in the A-K Region and from 0.8 to 1.0 in the Primorye Territory. The B's observed were classified into four types, namely, D, A-St, Mm-sm and Lm-sm. Mm-sm was observed in all 33 continental populations, and the populations from the A-K Region had only Mm-sm and Lm-sm. The D's, detected only in South East Primorye, were the first to be recorded in the Russian Far East. A-St, a new type of B's, was found only in the Primorye Territory. In addition, an extremely large subtelocentric B chromosome (macro St) was also detected in one male from Novolitovsk in Primorye. All types of B's were found in the Primorye Territory, probably suggesting the higher variability of B's in this area. We also found evidence to suggest that the B's in populations from the A-K Region might have much in common in C-staining property as well as in constitution with those in Korean populations.
