The photorequirement for the germination of Eragrostis seeds decreases with the progress of their after-ripening, and the germination occurs whether in continuous light or in darkness at the final stage of after-ripening. The dehydration of seeds or the puncturing of seed coats also results in a decrease of photorequirement for germination. The rate of water absorption of seeds increases with the germination capacity under continuous dark condition. However, there is no correlation between the respiration rate and the germination capacity; respiration is stimulated in the punctured seeds, but not in the after-ripened seeds. The after-ripened or punctured seeds which no longer have a photorequirement become light-sensitive again, when they are allowed to germinate in the air of low oxygen concentrations. The assumption is presented that the permeability to oxygen of the seed coat may be a factor controlling the seed germination of this species.
