Chromosaponin I (CSI) stimulates the growth of lettuce roots (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Grand Rapids), causing accelerated cell elongation. Growth stimulation was detected 6 h after the initiation of treatment with CSI, continuing for 3 days. Elongation of root cells in various other plants was also promoted by CSI.
