Action spectrum of negative phototropism in Boergesenia forbesii

The rhizoid of Boergesenia forbesii, a gigantic unicellular green alga, exhibited negative phototropism. The bending process at 32℃ followed Weber-Fechner's law and Bunsen-Roscoe's law. The minimum light energy inducing the phototropic bending was 30 J・m^<-2> at 467 nm and 32℃. The action spectrum of this negative phototropism had two distinct peaks at 380 and 443 nm, with shoulders at 430 and 470 nm and a trough around 410 nm. Light of wavelengths longer than 502 nm was ineffective. The structure of the spectrum agrees well with that reported for the positive phototropism of Avena coleoptiles and other plant parts.
