Phloem exudate from cotyledons of photoperiodically induced Pharbitis plants induced flowering in apices excised from non-induced seedlings and cultured in vitro. The exudate also stimulated flowering in apices excised from photo-induced seedlings and cultured under long-day conditions. The application of benzoic acid had similar effects. Both the exudate from non-induced plants and gallic acid suppressed flowering in apices from photo-induced seedlings. It appears that the phloem exudate contains flower-inducing substance(s), depending on the plant materials from which it was collected.
