The metabolic transformation of glycine into serine in the photosynthetic bacterium Chromatium vinosum was accompanied by the evolution of CO_2 due to decarboxylation of glycine. Isonicotinylhydrazide inhibited both ^<14>CO_2 evolution and the formation of ^<14>C-serine from ^<14>C-glycine. The results indicate that a glycine-serine transformation reaction takes place which is analogous to that occurring in green leaf tissues. Glycine may be metabolised through serine by this reaction. The light stimulation of ^<14>CO_2 evolution and ^<14>C-serine formation from ^<14>C-glycine by the Chromatium cells are judged to be results of the light-induced enhancement of ^<14>C-glycine uptake by the bacterial cells.
