The effects of deuterium oxide (D_2O) on light-induced lipid peroxidation and carbonylcyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone (CCCP)-induced carotenoid photobleaching were examined in isolated chloroplast fragments. D_2O stimulated the lipid peroxidation in the presence of CCCP or methyl viologen as well as in their absence. Carotenoid photobleaching was also enhanced by D_2O. These results led to the conclusion that the lipid peroxidation and part of the carotenoid photobleaching were induced by the singlet molecular oxygen because D_2O prolongs its lifetime.
