Rapid disappearance of small fat bodies during the early stage of imbibition of lettuce seeds

It was found that small fat bodies disappeared from New York lettuce seeds during the early stage of imbibition at 20℃. The disappearance began about 4 hr after the start of imbibition and ended before the start of the radicle elongation. It was completely suppressed under thermodormancy at 35℃. Red light and GA treatment promoted the disappearance, and far-red light and ABA treatment inhibited it. These results suggest that the disappearance of the small fat bodies may be closely related to the control mechanism of lettuce seed germination.
