Interactions of C_2H_4, CO_2, O_2 and high temperature in stimulating germination of cocklebur (Xanthium pennsylvanicum Wallr.) seeds were studied and the phase sensitive to each factor during germination was determined. The combination of CO_2 and enriched O_2, and particularly that of C_2H_4 and enriched O_2, much more effectively stimulated germination than CO_2 and C_2H_4. At low temperature, however, the co-operation of CO_2 and enriched O_2 was lost and only the effect of C_2H_4 In combination with CO_2 or enriched O_2 remained. Carbon dioxide stimulated C_2H_4 production and induced germination when it was applied in the first period of water imbibition, corresponding to the passive thrust forming phase. C_2H_4 became effective after the CO_2-responsive phase. In contrast, both O_2 enrichment and high temperature became increasingly effective with the imbibition times. Anaerobiosis applied during the first period of the germination process showed no inhibitory effect, whereas CO_2 and C_2H_4 were stimulative even under such a condition.
