The reduction of anhydrides, lactones, esters, carboxylic acids and acyl chlorides with trialkylborane is described. Cyclic anhydrides were reduced with 4mol eq of trialkylborane at temperatures above 300℃ to give diol derivatives via the lactones. Lactones, esters, carboxylic acids and acyl chlorides were reduced under similar conditions to give te corresponding alcohol derivatives.
