In Pteronemobius nitidus BOLIVAR, the seasonal development of the nymph seems to be controlled by three different photoperiodic responses. When reared at 28℃, the number of instars varied with photoperiod in a fashion which could be described as a reversed intermediate type. Growth in the early nymphal stage was controlled by a response of short-day type. The manifestation of diapause in the late nymphal stage was regulated by a long-day type. Temperature also influenced the number of instars and the morphological stage at which diapause occurred. In short photoperiods, the nymphs entered diapause at the last two nymphal stages at 28℃ but at earlier stages at 20℃. It was hypothesized that the upper limit of temperature for the diapause induction was lower in the younger instars than in the old. All these responses would stabilize the univoltine cycle with overwintering as a nymph. It was also found that photoperiod affected the adult head width and ovipositor length in different ways so that the two traits were not correlated to each other in certain conditions.
