In Pteronemobius nitidus, two wing forms, macropterous and micropterous ones, occurred in different proportions under different conditions of photoperiod. The occurrence of macropters was favored by long-day photoperiods and the critical photoperiod was found to be about LD 15 : 9 hr for this photoperiodic response at 28℃. Macropters tended to mature more rapidly than micropters. The period sensitive to this effect of photoperiod seemed to be the 3rd and 4th instars from the adult stage. Macropters were much more prevalent when nymphs were transferred from LD 10 : 14 to 14 2/3 : 9 1/3 hr than when kept at stationary photoperiods. An increase in photoperiod was effective on inducing macropterous development only if it occurred within a certain range of photoperiod. When transferred from various photoperiods to LD 14 2/3 : 9 1/3 or 16 : 8 hr, the incidence of macropters was inversely related to the duration of nymphal stage. The macropterous development seemed therefore to be suppressed by the induction and maintenance of intense diapause.
