In Pteronemobius nitidus BOLIVAR, the period of adult emergence extended over a long time, if the nymphs were kept in any stationary photoperiod at 28℃. They entered diapause at different instars, depending on the photoperiod. At a short photoperiod, the mortality was high and the fore wings were atrophied in some adults. Diapause was averted or terminated and the adult emergence was synchronized by an increase in photoperiod within a certain range. The photoperiod to which nymphs were first exposed influenced the effect of the subsequent photoperiod on promoting their development. The developmental response thus seemed to be determined by the magnitude and direction of the change as well as by the absolute level of photoperiod. Abrupt and gradual increments in photoperiod were equally effective. This unique response provides the principal means to maintain the univoltine strategy of this species.
