1. The proboscis extending time of the cabbage butterfly, Pieris rapae crucivora, on distilled water and sucrose showed a tendency to prolongation according to the increase of starvation after emergence while the time to sodium chloride continued nearly a constant and low level. 2. The following series on receptive stimulating effectiveness of 1 M solutions of five sugars and honey in the cabbage butterfly was obtained : honey>> sucrose=fructose>>> glucose> maltose≧lactose. The proboscis extending time to maltose and lactose showed shorter a level than that on distilled water. 3. The proboscis extending time of the males to several salts was slightly smaller value than that to distilled water or the same value. 4. The proboscis extending time of the female and male of the cabbage butterfly to sucrose decreased markedly by the addition of inorganic salts and chlorides. 5. The comparison of the nutritive value of sugars, sodium chloride and distilled water revealed the following series : sucrose=fructose>> glucose>> distilled water> maltose=lactose=sodium chloride. In the groups of the daily intake of sucrose, fructose and glucose and the starvation, the females showed longer survival than the males. 6. From the present results and the previous data (Kusano, 1963), the same arrangement of the effectiveness of sucrose, fructose, glucose, maltose and lactose on the proboscis extending time and the survival days in the cabbage butterfly accords with that of the receptive stimulating effectiveness of the same sugars on the tarsal chemoreceptors.
