The sensitivities of the tarsal chemoreceptors of several butterfly species to distilled water, sucrose and sodium chloride were investigated. 1. It was demonstrated in Vanessa indica, Nymphalis xanthomelas and Papilioxuthus that the fluctuations of the sensitivity of tarsal chemoreceptors to distilled water, sodium chloride and sucrose differ from species to species or within the sex according to the progress of starvation after emergence. 2. The stimulating effectiveness of sucrose in Nymphalis xanthomelas was decreased distinctly by the addition of sodium chloride. 3. It was shown in Vanessa indica, Nymphalis, Polygonia, Papilio xuthus, Parnara guttata, Pieris rapae and P. melete that frequeny of four response types to sucrose and sodium chloride varies with species or sex. 4. The sex difference of sensitivity of the tarsal chemoreceptors to sucrose and sodium chloride was observed in several species of butterflies.
