It has been more than 20 years since China's`open door' economic policy was implemented in 1978, resulting in a rapid development that has captured the attention of the world. With this has come considerable change in the Chinese people's lifestyle and thinking, including the area of sexual consciousness. The purpose of this article is to identify the changes that have occurred in Chinese people's sexual consciousness, as well as the major factors that have influenced (and continue to influence) their sexuality. Firstly, it highlights traditional Chinese sexuality. Secondly, by reference to history, it proceeds to clarify the present condition of Chinese sexuality and pinpoint some of the problems that have surfaced as a result of this new sexuality. Thirdly, the economical, social, and cultural factors that have brought about this new Chinese sexuality are analyzed. Finally, it seeks to indicate the future direction of Chinese sexuality by going on to suggest the importance of improving the country's sex education and establishing of government policy that is appropriate to the challenges posed by this sexual `liberation'.
