Japanese-Chinese ventures are a strong presence in China's economy. Many of these ventures are operated by the Japanese management in a well-established mode of practice embedded in its culture and values, which, more often than not, run counter to the local culture and values. Owing to this factor, communication between the parent management and the local management is very often ineffective and sometimes fails, and as a result conflicts occur. This paper tries to identify the problematic areas in business communication in Japanese-Chinese ventures. It examines the differences of both cultures and sets of values and the problems caused by a direct application of Japanese management practice in a Chinese cultural context. It explores the adaptability of the Japanese management system in a Chinese environment and the necessity to foster a new entrepreneurial culture by pursuing a"third way". It is hoped that the paper brings to light the importance of an understanding of the home culture of the parent company in a cross-cultural environment and the necessity of adapting an alien mode of management to a different cultural environment in order to create a harmonious working atmosphere and to improve efficiency and productivity.
