An arc welding method has been developed in which the welding current is alternated between the electrodes of the TIG and MIG welding methods to prevent arc interaction between the two. Observation of arc phenomena in this method showed the MIG feeding wire was easily melted at its tip. Droplets of the molten metal were periodically removed from the wire without spattering with the help of exposure in the TIG arc. Welding currents of the TIG and MIG can be changed independently without any arc interaction between the two electrodes. Furthermore, the MIG feeding wire can be fed without varying the heat input to the base metal. And an insufficient welding current for penetration of the base metal can be compensated by the TIG current. Therefore, this method is effective for efficient welding of steel plates and copper plates without preheating.
