The pressure hull for deep submersibles has to cope with a trade-off between raising the load-carrying capacity and keeping down the weight. For this reason, a spherical shell has been normally adopted for the pressure hull. Besides, high yield strength materials and high-precision workmanship are indispensable. Earlier, the authors confirmed that GTA welding was suitable for the 6,000 m class pressure hull of 10Ni-8Co steel. Recently, however, electron beam welding (EB W) has proved to be better than G TA welding, for EBW causes less welding distortion. The authors, in this paper, have established the effectiveness of EBW for the pressure hull of 6,000 m class of 10Ni-8Co steel.
