It is well known that electron beam welding is superior with high efficiency, precision, and economy of cost, because of deep penetration it gives with a single pass. Then application of electron beam welding for nuclear power plant components is eagerly being awaited. On the other hand, austenitic stainless steel is widely used for nuclear power plant components. Thereby, it is desirable to make welding heat input as low as possible. In response to this demand, the authors have been studying the welding conditions and the chemical compositions of base metal to prevent weld defect of austenitic stainless steel. The results obtained are summarized as follows : (1) Electron beam welding is applicable for austenitic stainless steel up to 80 mm thickness. (2) To prevent hot cracking, (P+S) contents of base metal should be controlled to under 0.045%. (3) To prevent porosity, nitrogen contents and oxygen contents should be controlled to under a certain value according to the thickness.
