A conical seat type hatch cover has been developed for the pressure hull of a 2000 m deep submergence research vehicle A light-weight and high-strength pressure hull is essentially required for a deep submergence research vehicles. The hatch cover, which is part of the pressure hull, must meet the requirements to the hull. A conical hatch cover, made of the same material as the pressure hull, shows the same dynamic behavior as the pressure hull and forms a structural continuity. In the process of the research and development work, model tests and FEM analyses by using mathematical models were carried out to solve some problems concerning structural continuity between the hatch cover and the pressure hull and those results were successfully applied to the design and fabrication of the deep submergence research vehicle. This paper describes the structural continuity of the conical seat type hatch cover obtained from those tests and FEM analyses. It is considered that this conical hatch cover combined with the pressure hull will make a great contribution to the development of deep submergence vehicles in the future.
