The propulsion system of the 2000 m Deep Submergence Research Vehicle "SHINKAI 2000" has been designed to enable the vehicle to have high maneuverability at low speeds. The vehicle has a main steerable thruster at the stern and a pair of auxiliary thrusters at midship which can tilt horizontally and vertically. Model basin tests which consisted of a resistance and self-propulsion test, a propeller open test, and an observation of the flow field, were carried out and it became evident that the vehicle could reach a required maximum speed of 3 knots. The thrusters are directly driven by AC motors of oil-filled pressure-compensated type. Large power-transistor inverters are adopted to control the speed of these motors. The method of control is VVVF (Variable Voltage and Variable Frequency), using pulse width modulation. These inverters are installed in a titanium-alloy pressure vessel. After the trial construction of the motor and the inverter was completed, several tests were carried out at high pressures and the atmospheric pressure. The adoption of the AC motors and inverters described above makes the electric system compact and light, and minimizes the power consumption.
