Cell temperatures were preliminarily compared between a slender vertical comb of Ropalidia variegata jacobsoni and an oblong comb of R. fasciata exposed to the direct sun in the tropics. Cells of the slender comb could retain lower temperatures (0.6-3.3℃ above ambient temperature) than could those of the oblong one (1.8-10.3℃). This was possibly realized by a more efficient heat loss to the ambience in the variegata comb, which has only two vertical rows of cells and, therefore, at least one side of cell walls is exposed. This suggests that slender combs are more advantageous, when built in insolated places.
