The occurrence of extended diapause in the prepupa prolongs the life cycle of Hasegawaia sasacola beyond one year, partly even to four years. The parasites of this gall midge follow their host, remaining in diapause for a long period. Thus, in these insects individuals in extended diapause are found together with those emerging within a year in northern Japan. The cause, geographical variation, and adaptive value of the extended diapause are discussed.
