Chemical Nature of Volatile Compounds from the Valvae and Wings of Male Delias Butterflies (Lepidoptera : Pieridae)

Volatile compounds present in the extracts from the valvae and wings of male adults of thirteen Delias species were examined by GC and GC-MS analyses. A number of saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons of varying carbon numbers were detected from the valva. Another characteristic compound (C_<18>H_<36>O) was also found from the valvae of twelve species as a predominant constituent in most species. In contrast, compounds detected from the wings included (E)-β-ocimene, diacetone alcohol, acetamide, farnesol, benzoic acid, methyl esters of fatty acids (C_<16>-C_<18>), saturated hydrocarbons and C_<18>H_<36>O together with large amounts of free fatty acids (C_<13>-C_<18>). The overall profile of these substances was more or less species-specific, suggesting the feasibility of chemotaxonomic consideration of Delias species based on them.
