The scale characters of Chlorophthalmid fishes were studied and the following results were obtained. (1) The structure of scales is not bilaterally symmetrical except that of scales of the belly and lateral line. In scales of the laterocentral portion of the trunk and the lateral region of the caudal peduncle, scales of the upper (exactly dorsal) first row above the lateral line, have a concave form in the anterior part of the upper lateral area, consequently conspicuous upper lateromedian angles are formed. In scales of the lower (exactly ventral) first row below the lateral line, lower lateromedian angles are formed similarly. Scales of the upper or lower second rows and of the more upper or lower rows have no such concave forms, but the upper basilateral angle projects anteriorly and the basal margin runs obliquely. Such outlined scales were referred to as Chlorophthalmidae type by the senior author (1958). Scale arrangement belongs to the overlapped type, consisting of seven scales, but when the optionl standard scale is taken on the lateral line, it consists of eight scales. (2) Scales on the lateral line are almost bilaterally symmetrical, their mucous tubes having peculiar shaped accessory apparatus, that is, mucous tube cover. Species-specific difference of this cover is not recognized. (3) Gtenii are arranged in a single marginal row, being formed merely by cutting of apical margin, and differ in shape among species. (4) Foci are apicad and usually situated posteriorly in a scale, existing on the position one fourth from the posterior end. (5) Scales have no groove, but have basal and lateral ridges. Ridges are not formed in a complete circle in scales of the body side, and basal and lateral ridges are almost equal in spaces. (6) Scales of these fishes are easily removed, and this tendency is stronger in large fishes than in young ones, so that they have regenerative scales in high percentage. But difference between regenerative and ordinary scales is obscure, because their character is transitional. It is supposed that regenerative scales at the early stage of regeneration, distinctly differ in structure from ordinary ones, but as they grow on, they become so alike to ordinary scales in structure, as to be finally indistinguishable from them.
