The present paper deals with the development of the later instars of larvae, about a year age, of Tomocerus minutus. On April, 5, 1958 about 40 individuals were caught in the yard of this university and brought into the laboratory for rearing and observation. By comparing the materials used with several specimens of the same age reared in the laboratory, the authors assumed that all of the materials subjected to the present experiment hatched out supposedly in June, last year. Hence the materials were considered to be the approximately homogeneous population. Larvae were fed with 'Koji-kabi' (Aspergillus oryzae) in a vial. Experiment has been performed for about 70 days, from April 10 (larval age of 314±10 day) to June 20 (386±10 day) of the year 1958. Average 3 specimens from the vial were removed and measured at about 10-day intervals. Specimens were preserved in 90 per cent alcohol. 1.It was noticed that the body growth gradually increased and showed a tendency of still more increase until reaching the adult condition or maturity. 2.The growth of antennae seemed to be slower than that of the body. The proportion of the average length of the 4th segment of antenna to that of the 3rd one was approximately 9: 100 during the period from 334±10 day to 386±10 day. So it was assumed that this proportion will be maintained until the adult stage. Many indivlduals at these stages have been found deficient in the 4th antennal segment. 3.Furcula did not show any remarkable increase in length during the period. Mucrones are almost as long as the hind claws and provided with 4 or 5 intermediate teeth (rarely 3 or 6). 4.Relative growth of the 4th abdominal segment to the 3rd one was almost constant, showing the average ratio of nearly 71: 100. 5.Inner marginal teeth of the hind claw is commonly 4 (rarely 3 or 5) in number. 6.Any regularity of the increase in number of the dental spines, corresponding to the ages advanced, was not observed. But the first spine (DS_1) and the fourth spine (DS_4) became remarkably large and strong, revealing the specific character. Dental spine formula is suitably denoted as 5-8/7-10=12-18, making allowance for the individual variations in each age group having not been observed statistically. 7.Under laboratory conditions T. minutus seems to require about one and a half year to be capable of the oviposition. 8.The number of instars and molting at the later stages of development could not be determined owing to the small number of the specimens.
