In the present paper the author deals with the description of a new species of Papirioides, with a revision of the dorsal organs of some Sminthurid insects hitherto recorded. The genus Papirioides, has not yet been recorded from Japan. Papirioides uenoi sp. nov. Body lenght: 1.38mm. Head: Yellowish brown. Frons, vertex, and genae darker. Mouth region paler. Antennae 1.67mm, longer than the body length, translucent; ant.1 brownish purple and the middle parts of ant.2 and ant.3 tinged with dark violet. Ant1:2:3:4=0.10:0.68:0.74:0.15. Ant.4 showing eight distinct, bead-like subsegments; ant.3 with eight subsegments on its distal half, not including those fused into the large, clubbed end. Ocelli 8+8. Each ocellus on an isolated round black patch. Thorax: Pale yellowish brown. Legs semi-transparent; basal part of tibiotarsus, femur, trochanter, and coxa dark violet. Unguis slender, slightly curved, with two pairs of inner teeth; basal teeth short and blunt at their apices. Unguiculus about two thirds as long as unguis, straight, broadly linear, acuminate, bearing an oblique spine at its inner base; subapical filament moderately long and strongly curved. Tenent hair absent. Abdomen: Upper side of the abdomen light yellow, with faint enamel-like luster, forming a palmate marking. Lateral side of the abdomen is of a dark chocolate color. Ventral side paler. There is a T-shaped yellow marking on the anterior dorsum whose foot extends posteriorly consisting two longitudinal stripes of chocolate color into the palmate marking stated above. Some irregular yellow speckles or bands are found on the antero-lateral parts of the abdomen. Dorsal organ subclavate, becoming gradually thickened towards its end, provided with the spine-like setae distributed over the surface, the basal part excepted. This organ yellowish in color, margined laterally with chocolate tint. Anogenital segment is of chocolate color, excepting its median part, and moreover, encircled with a circular yellow band. Collar of ventral tube dark brown. Furcula paler, 0.90mm in length. Ma:De:Mu=0.22:0.52:0.16. Dental setae formula is A_<1-7> B_<1-4> C_<1-7> E_3. Dorsal setae are not serrate except obscurely near the base. Both edges of mucro toothed, 29 teeth on outer edge and 32 on inner edge. Clothing of sparse, not much sturdy setae on body: more numerous and larger on head and ano-genital segment. Locality: Hinagura pass (1000m), Higashichikuma-gun, Nagano Pref. Several specimens were collected by Mr. shun'ichi Ueno on lods laying on the ground. 19. VI. 1952. Cotypes preserved in Yosii's and the author's collections. Remarks: This outstanding new species is no doubt belonged to the genus Papirioides owing to its curious club-shaped dorsal organ, although it comes very near in the other body structures to the genus Ptenothrix. When comparing the present species with Papirioides jacobsoni from Sumatura, it is easily distinguishable from the latter by the following differences: (1) the presence of the dorsal organ, becoming gradually thickened towards the end; (2) the absence of spine-like setae on the basal part of the dorsal organ; and (3) the possession of the dorsal yellow pattern, margined broadly with the pigment of chocolate color.
