The study of postembryonic development should be made in many specimens and, if possible, should be made by the laboratory rearing. About one hundred newly hatched larvae of Tomocerus minutus were reared in the laboratory for 110 days. When all the larvae hatch out simultaneously, the population is designated to be homogeneous. Larvae were fed with Koji-kabi (Aspergillus oryzae). Five specimens on an average were preserved in 90 per cent alcohol at definite intervals of about 5 days. By measurements and direct observations of the specimens within the same population on various successive occasions it has been possible to follow the absolute and relative growth, and to note the morphological differentiation taking place gradually. 1. The growth of the body is regular and seems to be represented by a part of S-curve. Retarding or decreasing in an average length of the body was observed on the 10-, 21-, 35-, 55-, 80-, and 105-day examples, which probably corresponded to the ecdysis of the insects. 2. The ratio of the antennae to the body increases gradually with ages. The results of measurements indicate that the mean values are 50/100 in the 3-day larvae, 70/100 in the 110-day larvae, and they presumably tend to converge to 72/100 in the full-grown specimens. 3. Each segment of antenna is related in the rate of relative growth as ant. III>ant. IV>ant. I=ant. II. Ant. IV is longer than ant. III in the newly hatched larvae: the average ratio of ant. IV to ant. III is 160/100 in the 3-day larvae. This ratio rapidly decreases with ages; it is 100/100 in the 15-day larvae, 20/100 in the 45-day larvae, and 18/100 in the 110-day larvae. 4. The rate of growth of furcula is not so much remarkable than those of body and antennae. 5. The ratio of ab. IV to ab. III is nearly equal in the 3-day larvae, and it seems to decrease with ages advanced. As could be expected it converges to 75/100 in the later instars representiong an imaginipetal growth. 6. Key for the seperation of the first instars of Tomocerus minutus, T. minor, T. longicornis (=Architomocerura litsteriana) and A. crassicauda. 1. Clavate tibiotarsal setae absent……crassicauda. -Clavate tibiotarsal setae present……2 2. Mucro of typical tomocerine form with 0-3 intermediate teeth but without setae. Ant. III slightly shorter than Ant. IV……3 -Mucro shorter, tapering from a broad base; without intermediate teeth or setae. Ant. III longer than Ant.IV……longicornis=litsteriana. 3. Ant. III with no annulations. Macrosetae of hind end of abdomen entirely smooth…minutus -Ant. III with 6-8 annulations more of less distinct between the unringed basal and apical regions of the segment. Macrosetae of hind end of abdomen indistinctly toothed quite unlike the ciliations of the bothriotrichia……minor.
