The larvae of Triturus pyrrhogaster of developmental stage 40 and 59 (after "The Okada & Ichikawa's Revised standard table of development") were reared in solutions of methyltestosterone at concentrations of 15, 30, and 60 μg/l. The statistical survey of experimental groups in shown in Table 1. In each experimental series the animals were divided into lots, and a lot of ten animals was reared separately in 1 liter of the solution and was maintained on a diet of Limnodrilus. The administration exerted the inhibitory effect on the proliferation of mesonephric blastema, and resulted in the abnormality of mesonephric tissue, i.e., the hydronephrosis, cystic extension of nephric tubules, and partial defect of mesonephros (Figs. 3, 4, 5). All of the experimentals were suffered from edema in consequence of the functional disorder of mesonephros. However, they recovered from edema when the were transferred afresh from the methyltestosterone solution into the ordinary tap water. The accumlative incidence of edematous animals in each experimental series is shown in Fig. 1. The treatment also resulted in the feminization of the gonad differentiation in male salamanders. Sex reversal was realized by the regressive development or defciency of the medullary mesenchyme. Such a modification of gonad structure was primarily caused by the shortage of mesonephric blastema cells. In some cases the medullary tissue of gonad was modifed into mesonephric tubules (Fig.7, 8 and 9). These tubules seem to be the result of alternate differentiation of the part of the mesonephric blastema which ordinarily develop into the medullary component of gonad. The findings support the view that the mesonephric blastema cells are pluripotential; they can differentiate into either mesonephric tubules or gonadal medulla. The present results generally coincide with the findings obtained by Bruner and Witschi ('54) in their study of Ambystoma opacum. The development of fat body is retarded and the formation of Mullerian duct is prevented in any of the treated animals. However, in the present study, no stimulating effect on the Wolffian duct was noticed.
