The possibility of existence of a specific tissue environment which intimately concerns with the induction of the urogenital system of the developing embryo was discussed in a previous study (Asayama, '50). In the present experiment, for the purpose of the demonstration of such a specific tissue environment, a strip of lateral plate mesoderm of embryos of Triturus phyrrhogaster (Okada & Ichikawa's standard stage 31) which ranges with the level from the 8th somite to the 17th somite was cut out and transplanted into the intermediate mesoderm regionof another embryo (Fig.1). Hosts and donors were reared in pairs for a period of 70 days and the differentiation of the urogenital territory of their operated sides were histologically examined in serial sections. When the dorsal part of lateral plate was transplanted, 70.5% (24 in 34 cases) of the hosts almost normally developed mesonephros, gonad, and fat body over the entire region of the operated side. In the cases in which the ventral region of the lateral plate was transplanted, the incidence of the formation of urogenital territory decreased to 23.8% (5 in 21 cases). Further detail of the observation is summarized in Table 1.Considering on the error which may be brought about by the operative haphazard, aforesaid incidences were statistically examined, and it was surely deduced that almost all of the urogenital tissues developed on the operated side of the host were derived from the modified differentiation of the transplanted lateral mesoderm. In other words, the specific tissue environment assumed in a previous study is confirmative. On this deduction the following conclusion was drawn: the lateral plate mesoderm retains a potency to differentiate into the urogenital tissue, and one of the most important components of the gonad, i.e., the primordial germ cell, which is ordinarily differentiated from the intermediate mesoderm canalso be differentiated from the lateral plate mesoderm by the modification of its prospective fate. The present result seems to be good enough to confirm the epigenetic view of the germ cell formation.
