The author had several chances to observe the spawning process of the whelk in the aquarium in the years 1951 and 1952. Spawning was commenced on July 1 in both the years. Temperature of the environment at that time was in the range of 13〜14℃. A female animal produced 26 to 49 egg-cases in the period of 3〜5 days, and each egg-case contained about 100 or more eggs. The egg-mass delivered from the female genital opening is embedded in transparent gelatinous substance. It is then carried into pedal-pore through a tube-like groove which is formed temporarily from the side wall of the foot. The pedal-pore is situated on the mid-ventral line of the footsole near the anterior end. In the pedal-pore, the eggs are kept for a period ranging from 2 to 6 hours. After the period, the eggs are finally deposited enclosed with perfectly formed egg-case which is probably formed from the gelatinous substance by coagulation of its surface. As soon as an egg-case has been deposited from the pedal-pore, a new egg-mass is ejected from the genital opening, and within a several minutes it is carried into the pedal-pore. As regards the function of the pedal-pore in other groups of the marine snails there are several reports; Dakin and Ankel found a glandular tissue in the pedal-pore in Buccinum and Nassa or some other species, and therefore they insisted upon that the gland plays mainly a role to secrete a substance which finally changes into the hard surface of the egg-case. In contrast to Dakin and Ankel, Ino has reported that he could not find any glandular tissue in the pedal-pore for Babylonia, Kelletia, Thais and Nassarius, and he is of the opinion that the nard surface of the egg-case may be formed by the coagulation of gelatinous substance. In Neptunea the present author could also find no glands, in the pedal-pore and there-fore he assumes that the role of the pedal-pore is to determine the shape of the egg-case and to attach it to the substratum.
