In the present paper an account is given of the sexual dimorphism of a loach found in Hokkaido, and of its taxonomical status. The sexes of the present species could be distinguished by the following characters. Male: The pectoral fin in the male is relatively longer and much more tougher than in the female, and its shape is somewhat triangular. The width of the first five pectoral fin rays, especially of the first three, are broader than the others. During the spawning period, the minute nuptial tubercles are present on the dorsal surface of the first six pectoral fin rays. The entire surface of the cheek, the preoperculum, the operculum and the scalp, and the predorsal surface of the trunk are covered with the scattered tubercles. The lamina circularis is absent. Female: In the female, the above-mentioned sexual characters are not observed. The above-described sexual characters of the present species could be distinguished from the European one, Barbatula barbatulus (LINNAEUS), in having the five enlarged pectoral fin rays and the nuptial tubercles occupied on the head and the trunk. Judging from the statistical observation of the sixty one specimens from Chitose, Hokkaido, the present species much resembles to the East Asiatic one, Nemacheilus toni (DYBOWSKI), though that is different from this in having more numbers of the anal fin rays and the doral fin rays, as well as the broader interorbital space. D. S. JORDAN and H. W. FOWLER (1903), D. S. JORDAN and C. L. HUBBS (1925), and Sh. Tanaka distinguished Hukudojo from Hokkaido, Orthrias oreas JORDAN and FOWLER, from the European species, Barbatula barbatulus (LINNAEUS). L. S. BERG (1907) regarded the above-mentioned Japanese loach as a subspecies of the European one, N. barbatutuls toni (DYBOWSKI). H. W. FOWLER (1924) and T. MORI (1936) combined the Japanese and the North Chinese species into one species, N. toni (DYBOWSKI). I sugget here that Hukudojo found in Hokkaido is able to be distinguished from the European species and should be regarded as a subspecies of the East Asiatic species, Barbatula toni oreas (JORDAN and FOWLER).
