I have distingished the sexual differences by the following characters: 1. In the breeding season, the body of the female becomes temporarily thicker and deeper than that of the male. 2. In the male, the pectoral, the ventral and the anal fins are longer, broader and tougher than those of the female. 3. Generally in the male, the urino-genital papilla on the cloaca is thicker than those of the female. In the female, the posterior edge of this opening is more closed to the anal fin, and the muscular lobe on the ventral side of the rectum is more well developed than that of the male. 4. In the breeding season the nuptial coloration and the pearl organs appear both on the male and the female. But in general, the nuptial color of the female is less distinct and the pearl organs in the female are less in number and smaller in size. From our observations the characters above mentioned are variable in the individuals and in the specimens from the different localities. 5. The distinguished sexual characters above described appear more distinctly in the freshwater form of the present species as compared with the brackishwater form.
