The actively mode-locked fiber lasers can produce symmetric, transform limited pulses and can achieve gigahertz rates when harmonically mode-locked. However, harmonically mode locked erbium fiber laser output is unstable and noisy owing to the mode jumping and the difficulty in establishing a definite phase relationship among the different groups of coupled axial modes inside the cavity. This problem has attracted considerable attention and several methods are reported to generate the stable pulses with suppressed noise, e.g., use of Fabry-Perot inside the cavity or control of the active gain medium position. We have used a simple but novel method of mode-locking the fiber ring lasers which relies on the fixed phase relationship among the various groups of axial modes inside the cavity. To realize this, the harmonic signal used to drive the external modulator is AM modulated at the frequency of the axial mode spacing. Highly stable and clean pulses are generated with this method. In this paper we report the effect of external feedback on the harmonically mode-locked fiber laser. It is found that the pulses become more stable with external feedback. The feedback was done using another wavelength division multiplexer (WDM) which serves two purpose; (i) it stabilizes the ring laser output power and (ii) prevents the pump power from entering in the ring cavity other than EDFA. These modifications in the ring cavity resulted in suppressed noise and additional stability.
