A survey was made with LDH isozyme patterns of heart muscles from ten species of amphibians. Isozymes were separated by electrophoresis, run on a sheet of cellulose acetate at pH 8.6 for 45 min. under a constant current of 3 mA/sheet at room temperature. Figure 1 is a diagrammatic representation of the LDH zymograms obtained, which seems to indicate that the heart tissues of amphibians here studied exhibit diverse patterns of LDH isozyme, from an under developed type of LDH-1 to a fully differentiated one. Experiment has also demonstrated that the brook lamprey, standing at the lowest systematic position in vertebrates, has no sign of LDH-1 in heart muscles; only a single isozyme, LDH-5, occurs instead. In the light of evidence obtained by Nakano and Whiteley (1965) and Nakano (unpublished), both indicating a possible absence of LDH-1 in heart muscles of various teleosteans, the above findings may lead us to speculate that evolutionary changes in these animal phyla proceed in close association with the differentiation of LDH-1 in heart muscles.
