Adhesiveness of newt eggs to a glass-substrate was tested on the surface of the animal hemisphere during early developmental stages. After the jelly coat and vitelline memebrane were removed, the egg was introduced into a small glass tube and allowed to rest om the bottom. After ten minutes at 20-25℃, the egg was detached from the bottom by laying down the tube. Differences in the way the eggs detached were taken as a relative measure of adhesiveness of the eggs to the glass-substrate. An uncleaved egg showed little adhesion. The egg first gained adhesivess at the early staga of the first cleavage, particularly around the double stripe stage. Its adhesive property declined rapidly with the progress of division. Strong adhesiveness appeared again at the same stage of the second cleavage, followed by a rapid decrease in strength just as in the first cleavage. Such cyclic changes in adhesiveness repeated themselves in the subsequent cleavages at least up to the early morula. A strong adhesive property was also observed in a white unpigmented surface appearing along the advancing cleavage furrow. Additional observations were also presented showing the egg's strong adhesiveness by hanging the adherent eggs upside down.
