In a series of studies, of which this is the second, observations on the life cycles of the three species of planarians inhabiting in a spring-fed stream in Nayoro City, North Hokkaido, are described, together with some remarks about their ecology. The observations were performed by Carpenter-Kawakatsu's method. Namely: once a month 100 specimens of planarians were collected at random in the natural habitat, and the numbers of sexually mature worms and sexually immature worms were noted; the results, expressed in percentages of the total number, are graphically recorded, together with the variations in water temperature. At the same time as this field observation, worms from the locality have been cultured over several years. And the breeding season, the breeding behavior, the number of cocoons laid by one worm in one breeding season, the hatching of cocoons, and the number of juveniles released from one cocoon were observed. Phagocata iwamai ICHIKAWA ET JAWAKATSU, Dendrocoelopsis lacteus ICHIKAWA ET OKUGAWA and Dendrocoelopsis ezensis ICHIKAWA ET OKUGAWA are the species of non-fissioning planarians; namely, both in the habitat and also in the laboratory, no fission of these three species was observed at any season. In general, fully mature specimens of Ph. iwamai occurred from March to June. They laid cocoons from the latter part of March to June. After the breeding season, sexual organs of many specimens were reduced. The cocoon is ovoid in shape and is approximately 0.6 to 2.8mm in the length of the long axis. The hatching of one lot of the cocoons occurred 44 to 92 days after the laying (July to September). Each cocoon released 2 to 5 juveniles. Their sexual organs developed in the spring of the next year. In Den. lacteus, fully mature specimens occurred from December to April and laid cocoons from December to April or the middle part of May. The cocoon is spherical in shape and is 0.9 to 1.5mm in diameter. The hatching of the cocoon occurred 83 to 124 days after laying (April to July). Each cocoon released 2 to 6 juveniles. In Den. ezensis, jully mature specimens occurred throughout the year. However, their number reaches its higher rate in winter and spring. They laid cocoons from April to the first part of June. The spherical shaped cocoon is 1.8 to 2.8mm in diameter. The hatching of the cocoons occurred 37 to 49 days after laying (June to September). Each cocoon released 2 to 8 juveniles.
