The retinal rod and the stalk region of visual cell in the planarian eye were studied by the electron microscopy. The retinal rod consisted of two parts, i. e. the rhabdome and the conical "middle region." It was confirmed that the rhabdome was of a fabric which was closely packed with numerous tubular microvilli whose diameter ranged from 700 to 1200 Å. From the image of the cross section of the rhabdome it is likely able to be said that eigher some of these microvilli fused partially one another or some of each microvillus branched off in two. The thready or tubular material was presented longitudinally in each of the microvilli. The distal tips of some microvilli, mostly in a center of the rhabdome, were enlarged and slight projection ran out from the enlarged periphery of the tip. The proximal ends of the microvilli were sometimes intruded deeply into the middle region or coiled complicatedly. The vacuoles enclosed in the two membranes were frequently observed in the boundary between the rhabdome and the middle region. Moreover, several vacuoles and vesicles in various sizes and few neurotubules were seen in this region. The stalk region contaned the numerous neurotubules, were in this region. The stalk region contained the numerous neurotubules, the multivesicular bodies and the small vesicles. The stalk region ran out through the cupshaped pigment layer, and the desmosome was found at the contact portion between the stalk region and adjacent pigment cell.
